History of Mussoorie

The word “Mansoor,” the name of a shrub that is commonly found in the region, is where the name “Mussoorie” originates. In 1803, under the guidance of Umer Singh Thapa, Gurkhas fortified the area and annexed Mussoorie’s border to their domain. East India Company also held sway over the provinces at the time, which led to the start of battle in 1814. They conquered Saharanpur district and incorporated it into their empire until 1819. At the same time, British soldiers found Dehradun to be a relaxing vacation destination. The area was kept secret, but not until other people heard about it and British officials learned about it. Mussoorie rose to prominence as a top summer vacation spot in 1827.

In the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s, the Nehru family, including Indira Nehru (later Indira Gandhi), made numerous trips to Mussoorie and stayed at the Savoy Hotel.  They also visited the adjacent city of Dehradun, where Vijayalakshmi Pandit, a sister of Nehru, eventually made her permanent home. The 14th Dalai Lama moved to Mussoorie on April 20, 1959, during the 1959 Tibetan Rebellion. He stayed there until April 1960, when he moved to Dharamsala, Himachal Pradesh, where the Central Tibetan Administration is currently based.
