History of Dalhousie

The city was seen as a getaway to escape the Indian summer, giving a calm and pleasant atmosphere, and was founded in 1854 by Lord Dalhousie, then Governor-General of India. In the wake of the 1857 War, the Military Department of the Government of India, expanded its survey of lower Himalayas, to identify suitable locations for building “sanitaria and cantonments” for “quartering” British soldiers and military units. The five nearby hills—Bhangora, Bakrota, Terah, Potreyn, and Kathalagarh—were purchased by the Chamba kings in order to develop the region as a hill station. Soon after, Dalhousie rose to prominence as a top hill destination and tourist destination for everybody. In the year 1861, Dalhousie was included into the Gurdaspur district. In 1966 it joined Himachal Pradesh. It continues to be a well-liked vacation spot.

At 1937, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose spent a significant amount of time in Dalhousie. Subhash Baoli and Subhash Chowk are two locations named after him today.
